Art + Architecture + Thought
Works . Projects . Publications
This portfolio shows the production of José
Luis Chacón, architect, artist, professor, researcher and flâneur. He graduated
in Architecture in 1990 at Universidad de Los Andes (ULA), in Mérida Venezuela.
Since 1991 he has been a full time university professor, and now holds the
position of Titular Professor at that same university. Teaching Architectural
Design Studio (TDA) and different seminars of pre and post graduate levels,
along with his academic formation (MSc. in Philosophy, 2001, and PhD. in
Architectural Composition, 2009), he has been able to develop his thought about
theoretic matters in architecture, art and aesthetics.
However, in parallel to his academic career, he
has worked independently as an artist and as an architect as well. As an artist
he has specialized in installations, or “space constructions” as he likes to
call them. Most of them are large ensamblages
built to be inhabited by the spectator, either with his body or his senses. The
architecture works are rather limited; among them a few houses, a couple of
chapels and a school, located in Mérida. His design is intentioned to respect
tradition while reaching simplicity formally and technically. Sometimes on his own, sometimes in association with
other architects or with collaborations by different artists, he has produced a
corpus of works, projects and publications, which is shown here in this
portfolio. This selection of products therefore shows his interests and achievements
in art, architecture and thought.
José Luis Chacón was born and lives in Mérida
Venezuela. He has lived and studied in Vancouver Canada and Milan Italy; as a
flanêur, he has also travelled around many places. Working still at the Faculty
of Architecture and Design (FADULA), where he holds different responsibilities,
he is now involved in launching the TiA (Taller
i Arte+Arquitectura), a research and production studio based on
his theories about the relationship between art and architecture; a few of the
works and projects presented are the result of the TiA.
